The Covid-19 pandemic continues to put unprecedented strain on health systems worldwide. The Learning Rooms are seeing many of our healthcare clients significantly step up their recruitment efforts to replace those healthcare staff who have become unwell to help them to maintain services.
The HSA have indicated that they do not intend to relax the requirement of Employers to provide Manual Handling Training during the Covid-19 Emergency. To assist with this training for healthcare staff The Learning Rooms are now making our People Handling online course available for free over the coming months. This will help organisations provide essential training to new staff, some of which are returning to the healthcare sector.
The vital skills involved in the safe moving and handling of people are usually delivered as part of a blended or face-to-face training workshops. Due to time pressure, limited resources and the Government guidelines on best practice on social distancing this digital learning resource provides a viable solution. This online course is a valuable starting point in order to gain the basic theory when people handling in healthcare. It also offers best practice practical skills demonstrations.
The content of this course was a collaborative effort between The Learning Rooms, the Health Management Institute of Ireland, Occupational Physiotherapy Solutions and the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. Over the past number of years, this resource has been utilised across numerous healthcare organisations nationwide from smaller care providers to larger hospitals and the HSE.
The course covers the following:
- Introduces moving and handling of people
- Describes safer people handling practices
- Features specialist guidance from a chartered physiotherapist
- Outlines the process for people handling risk assessments
- Sets out the principles of safer handling
- Demonstrates the key safer handling techniques:
- Rolling a person
- Inserting and removing sliding sheets
- Repositioning people using sliding sheets
- Assisting people to stand and walk with handling belts
- The use of roll boards in lateral transfers
- Using hoists
- Highlights the important role you play in safer people handling
This course is relevant to all frontline and ancillary staff within the acute and community hospital sectors; carers working in long-stay institutions, respite care and nursing homes; those who deliver home help services; providers of nurse education.
The Learning Rooms were originally approached by Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics (CPOHE), a clinical interest group of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) about this resource and are delighted to be able to make it available for free in the hope it will ease some strain on those people on the frontline during this pandemic.
The People Handling course is 30 minutes in duration and can be accessed for free on The Learning Rooms Vimeo channel.
To help healthcare organisations and staff, we have also made our Hand Hygiene eLearning course available for free to all healthcare organisations worldwide.
The Learning Rooms are also partnering with the Health Management Institute of Ireland to deliver an online induction package for healthcare organisations currently onboarding new staff. The healthcare induction package comprises Manual Handling, People Handling, Hand Hygiene, Fire Safety for Healthcare and Resilience in the Workplace eLearning modules.
